The Harvard Law School Forum provides an analysis of a study of class actions through 2012. At the end of November, 195 securities class actions were filed in federal courts—a pace that, if continued through December, would lead to a total of 213 cases for the full year. According to the study, that would put 2012 filings just slightly below their average rate over the previous five years.
The article, and the underlying study provide an excellent analysis of those cases, and the trend over the years of filings, settlements and awards.
