Daniel Kahl Named as Chief Counsel of National Exam Program

The Securities and Exchange Commission today announced that Daniel S. Kahl has been named Chief Counsel of its Office of Compliance Inspections and Examinations (OCIE).  In this role Mr. Kahl will oversee a staff of 15 lawyers and advise OCIE’s leadership on legal, technical, and policy matters regarding the agency’s National Exam Program.

“Dan’s expertise in policy and regulatory issues makes him an excellent addition to OCIE’s leadership team.  In his prior roles at the SEC he has been a strong partner for our National Exam Program and as OCIE’s Chief Counsel he will be instrumental in helping us advance our mission,” said OCIE Director Marc Wyatt.

Mr. Kahl said, “I look forward to working with Marc, the OCIE leadership team, and the talented staff of the Chief Counsel’s Office.  Assisting the National Exam Program in protecting investors is incredibly exciting and I am truly grateful for the opportunity.”

Mr. Kahl joined the SEC’s Division of Investment Management in 2001 as a counsel and was later promoted to branch chief.  For the past five years, he has served as Assistant Director of the division’s Investment Adviser Regulation Office.  Before coming to the SEC, he was an attorney at the Investment Adviser Association, FINRA, and the North American Securities Administrators Association.  Mr. Kahl holds a B.S. from Penn State University, a J.D. from Southern Methodist University, and an L.L.M. from Georgetown University Law Center.

OCIE conducts the SEC’s National Examination Program through examinations of SEC-registered investment advisers, investment companies, broker-dealers, self-regulatory organizations, clearing agencies, and transfer agents.  It uses a risk-based approach to examinations to fulfill its mission to promote compliance with U.S. securities laws, prevent fraud, monitor risk, and inform SEC policy.
